a feature film inspired by real events
A group of determined orphan boys work together to overcome obstacles, defy expectations, and become the SHOELESS WONDERS, a legendary 1920’s Virginia barefoot football team that went undefeated and unscored upon for eight years. The film ends with the team's first win.
In the 1920's, Lynchburg, Virginia was one of the largest shoe manufactures and distributors in the world. Ironically, it was also home to the Shoeless Wonders, a team of orphans who became a national legend playing football without shoes for a winning streak of 8 years.
The SHOELESS WONDERS film, inspired by true events, beautifully illustrates that success is not defined by our circumstances. One night after 12 year old BILLY BRANHAM and his little brother arrive at The Home, Billy sneaks out to run away and finds a group of orphan boys secretly playing football. Convinced to join them, Billy discovers his natural gift for the game and soon realizes his knack for football might be his ticket out of the orphanage and into a real family. As both Billy’s comradary with the team and love of the game grows, so does the sense of brotherhood and family among the orphans. Coachless underdogs without real equipment, the boys dream of becoming a real football team and playing in the annual New Year's Eve Football Challenge. Their dream, brotherhood, and the childish sense of "wonder" not only drives them to become the legendary SHOELESS WONDERS but transforms the boys and redefines their understanding of what it means to be family.

HumanKind, formerly Presbyterian Homes & Family Services and the Family Alliance, was originally established as an orphanage where the true story of the Shoeless Wonders took place. HumanKind has strengthened families and communities in many different capacities since 1903, adapting their services to meet the needs of the communities they serve. In the 1960’s, HumanKind started to offer residential care to adults with intellectual disabilities, where many adult residents are living in their care today.
