HumanKind, formerly Presbyterian Homes & Family Services and the Family Alliance, has strengthened families and communities in many different capacities since 1903, adapting their services to meet the needs of the communities they serve. Originally established as an orphanage, thousands of children grew up on the Lynchburg campus due to difficult circumstances with their families. In the 1960’s, HumanKind started to offer residential care to adults with intellectual disabilities, where more than 60 adult residents are living in their care today.
In 2008 HumanKind developed a range of high quality community based services for children and families, merging with another nonprofit, the Family Alliance, to provide a full-continuum of services ranging from prevention, education, and healthy lifestyles for children and families. Their programs and services now include five focus areas: Early Childhood Development, Economic Empowerment, Mental Health Services, Residential Care, and Safe and Healthy Living. Every day, they work to assist families in overcoming challenges, making responsible choices, and improving their quality of life.
HumanKind now encourages, empowers, and enriches the lives of more than 7,300 individuals each year throughout Virginia. The impact of HumanKind would not be possible without the generosity of their supporters.
